In short
Traveller review apps and Aevum help you explore in different ways. Review apps gather ratings and reviews from many travellers, so you can see what other visitors thought. Aevum is a Malaysian app that organises cultural places through stories about their history, roots, food and sacred spaces, so you can understand why a place matters. Many people use both.
This is a general comparison of two approaches, not a review of any particular app. If you spot an error, email [email protected] and we will correct it.

What ratings tell you, and what stories add
Ratings and reviews are a quick way to see how other visitors found a place. Aevum is built for a different job: helping you understand the cultural story of a place. Here is what Aevum focuses on:
- Neighbourhood stories: Long-running family businesses and old heritage sites are included for their history, whether or not they have many online reviews.
- Context, not just ratings: A rating sums up visitors’ experiences. It isn’t designed to explain why a street corner, a building or a recipe shaped a city’s identity. Aevum’s stories do that.
- Stories, not just opinions: Aevum’s content focuses on history and context rather than individual visit reports.
How Aevum works
Aevum starts in Ipoh, its first city, with more cities planned.
Aevum aims to change how you experience a city’s culture, by putting stories first. It groups places into cultural categories, including Heritage & Roots, Gastronomy, Arts, Festivals and Sacred Places, so you can explore by theme rather than by rating.
Instead of just a pin on a map, Aevum is a growing archive of local stories, from the history of shophouses and miners’ clubs to the origins of local food traditions.
How Aevum stories are made and checked
- Starting point: Places and initial information come from public sources and are gathered and drafted with AI help.
- Checking: Facts are checked with AI help. A person then reviews each story for cultural nuance, one by one.
- Improving: Free listing claims for venues are coming soon, so they can improve their own story. Anyone can report an error by emailing [email protected], and a “Report an error” option will be in the app.
New stories are added as we research them.

Questions
How is Aevum different from travel review apps?
Aevum focuses on cultural heritage and the stories behind places, rather than visitor ratings. It groups places into categories such as roots, arts, gastronomy and sacred spaces. Aevum does not currently have user star ratings.
How does Aevum check its stories?
Facts are checked with AI help, and a person reviews each story for cultural nuance, one by one. Venues will be able to improve their own story once listing claims launch (coming soon), and anyone can report an error by email.
Can local businesses get listed on Aevum? What does Verified mean?
Yes. Free listing claims are coming soon: venues and heritage organisers will be able to claim their place for free and help improve its story. Venues will also be able to join the Aevum ecosystem as Verified venues. For this, we check their documents, such as SSM business registration, halal certification where relevant, phone number and address. Verified venues will be able to offer vouchers and see basic analytics. The Verified badge is about the business's details; it does not mean that every fact in a story has been checked.
Which places can I discover on Aevum?
Aevum covers places that shape a city's culture, from historic buildings and sacred spaces to artisan shops and traditional food spots. Aevum starts in Ipoh, its first city. We are adding more places and stories, and plan to add more cities.
